A1 Precise Cone, Cube and Sphere

PDFPrintE-mail

Sphere, cone and cubeI put this project off because although I really love hollow forms, the challenge of making something this precise, with no texture - so a pristine surface - was really daunting. As it turned out, I actually really enjoyed making these pieces.

I considered building them around a burnable core but this seemed like a recipe for disaster if they collapsed. So I made them using precise measurements and dry construction.

The only comment from the evaluators was, "The cone finish is the benchmark for the other two." I guess they didn't have much more to say!

Symmetry - 5 out of 5
Edges and Form - 1.5 out of 2
Uniform Surface - 1.5 out of 2
Required Size - 1 out of 1

9 out of 10 - not bad!

Here is the project description from the Masters Registry website:-

Make three hollow closed geometric forms to forms that are related in scale. Finish with a uniform scratchbrush shine. The size is determined by the artist, but pieces should be roughly the size of a walnut. The surface should be perfectly smooth, with no texture or ornamentation. These are not wearable or functional pieces—this is a technical exercise.
