Glass Classes
Julia teaches a number of classes involving glass. A basic glass fusing class, Making Glass Cabochons, covers kiln fired glass for use in jewellery.
Glass cabochons are a useful staple of jewellers and metal clay artists, combining well with both sterling silver and metal clay. They are also very popular on their own as earrings or pendants.
On this class Julia shows you how to make your own glass cabochons using kiln formed glass and glass fusing techniques. You'll learn the basics of working with glass from cutting glass safely to trapping inclusions and using different types of colouring materials. Firing will be covered fully and those new to kilns will get a lesson in how to programme a kiln for glass.
Julia also teaches a class which combines glass with metal clay. Glass and metal clay are a fabulous combination. Low firing temperature metal clay can be combined with glass to produce some wonderful pieces of jewellery.
This class focusses on using glass cabochons together with metal clay. Several ways of combining glass with metal clay are explored including trapping glass between layers, using extruded tendrils of metal clay and wrapping clay around glass.
It also covers the specific challenges of firing glass including suitable firing schedules, kiln ramping and programming. If you are new to using a kiln, this class will help you to understand your kiln better.
